Chicago-bound freight train derails in central New York; no injuries

A freight train derailed in central New York early Wednesday, dumping about a dozen cars from the tracks, authorities said.

The CSX train derailed in the village of Canastota, 20 miles east of Syracuse, shortly after 6 a.m., said Madison County Sheriff Ronald Cary.

The train of about 30 cars and was headed from Boston to Chicago, carrying truck containers on flat cars. Between 10 and 15 cars derailed, Cary said.

The engineer and conductor were not hurt. There were no evacuations, but local traffic had to be rerouted around the accident site, the sheriff said.

The location is about five miles from Oneida, where a CSX train derailed in March, triggering the explosion of four liquid propane tankers. No one was injured in that accident, but hundreds of local residents were evacuated, the New York Thruway was temporarily shut down and Amtrak passenger service was interrupted.

Pay yourself first

After a few years and a few minuscule raises I have been able to slightly up the amount of my automatic withdrawals and will continue to do so with future raises.

Paying yourself first means to deciding how much you want to save and then paying your bills with what's left.

I hear lots of people complain that they can't afford to save any money. OK, I'll admit that I occasionally think of what I could do if I had that extra money.

In time, I did get used to living without it and adjusted my spending accordingly. That meant canceling my home phone service and not buying any new clothes.

I also tend to treat my automatic withdrawals as a bills that must be paid, just like the utilities or rent or cell phone. Except, instead of making a landlord or company rich when I pay my bills, I'm making myself rich by adding to my savings.

Figaro's Pizza now in Abu Dhabi

The first Figaro's Pizza store planned for the Middle East has opened in Abu Dhabi.

Sense Gourmet, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi-based Foodco Holding, signed an exclusive franchising agreement with Figaro's Pizza in early 2007 to open stores in seven Middle Eastern countries. On Jan. 17, the group opened their first location in the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi -- the first of four Figaro's Pizza restaurants it will open this year.

Plans call for the opening of 35 locations in the United Arab Emirates alone, with two locations in Abu Dhabi, two in Dubai and one in Sharjah to kick off the expansion. Additional locations are planned for Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Egypt.

In addition to expanding to the Middle East, Salem-based Figaro's Pizza also recently signed a franchising agreement for Mexico, where 50 stores are expected to open.
