Give the pill a pass

In your quest for good health, you likely pop a pill or two every day - a vitamin pill, that is. While most research suggests that supplementing your diet with a multivitamin is beneficial, a study published in the Feb. 28 Journal of the American Medical Association suggests something interesting: People who take antioxidant vitamins - such as vitamins C, E or A - don't live any longer than people who opt not to take supplements containing high doses of antioxidants.

The lesson, say most health experts, is that while taking a multivitamin may be good for you, getting your nutrients from real food is always better.

If you think it's tough to get it all in a day, consider the following nutritional superheroes - the latest additions to a growing list of so-called "superfoods." This far-from-usual fare will add a vitamin, mineral and phytochemical wallop to any meal or snack.

People love those small potatoes

Running a profitable and diversified farm business is obviously important to Andy Haarsma, but the real icing on the cake is staying connected with various sectors of the whole agriculture products chain, including consumers. The Haarsma family operation at Spruce Grove, Alta., derives great satisfaction from producing products with a specific end use or that fit a particular market niche. "What I really like is getting feedback from the end user," Haarsma says. He wants to make sure the product he delivers is right for the processor or consumer. If improvements are necessary, he wants to know about them.

"I like to know we are producing a quality product that people need and appreciate," he says. "To some extent we all need to be needed."

Haarsma works along with his brother Dave and father Gary in ventures that range from contract and identity preserved (IP) wheat and canola production, to an expanding gourmet potato business.

Trust puts emphasis on youngest players

Cox said: “We tried it and carried it on and it went well for a year, but what happened was more and more children wanted to get involved because the way we ran it was different to other local leagues.“We try to keep a lid on parent behaviour, whereas unfortunately with other local leagues there was a problem. That then started creeping into our leagues and we began to have problems with parents from other leagues because our parents had been cocooned and it was a different ball game away from the CYFL.“There were other things too that were out of our control with the hiring of pitches and games being called off."A new 30-week programme will start in the summer with almost 600 children expected to enrol. The Great Grilled Cheese

Usually I don't really care that much about celebrating the random food holidays that are out there (unless of course it involves making a specialty cocktail then I'm ready and willing!), but I am super excited about today's nonsense food holiday. Drums please, it's National Grilled Cheese Day (actually this month is National Grilled Cheese Month too)!

YumSugar and I love cheese so much that we marked this one on the calendar months ago. I'm a big fan of enjoying the simple pleasures of life and nothing is as wonderfully good as slices of cheese melted between two pieces of toasted, buttery bread. On average I consume about one grilled cheese a week and practically lived on these little sandwiches in college. I love them made with individually packed American cheese slices and wheat bread as much as I love them made with CowGirl Creamery's goat cheese and fresh baked focaccia.
