Light, tasty

Tis the season when the breads don't rise. During Passover celebrations this week, Jews around the world will be eating unleavened breads, to celebrate the haste with which their ancestors left captivity in Egypt — so hastily, according to Exodus, that God ordered them to eat the first Passover meal dressed and ready for travel. .

It’s almost time to close the curtain on another piece of Naples ...

Pet rocks were all the rage, the world saw the first joint space mission between the U.S. and Russia, and the record of the year was “I Honestly Love You," by Olivia Newton-John.

It was 1975 and it became a year to remember in Southwest Florida, when Julius Fiske, a retired New York businessman, and other investors opened the Naples Dinner Theatre on Oct. 7 with the episodic saga of “George M."

When the theater off Immokalee Road closes its curtain after a final performance Sunday night, Naples will lose another bit of its history.

“It's sad to see. But I guess that's just part of progress," said Collier County Commissioner Frank Halas, whose district has been home to the theater for more than three decades.

The dinner theater joins a long list of other landmarks that Naples has lost in recent years.

At lunch with Jonathan Gold

William Booth of the Washington Post phoned up the new Pulitzer Prize winner and offered to buy him a meal at the spot of his choosing. It's the fun read of the day.

"I'll be the chubby white guy with long red hair," [Gold] says. "You can't miss me."

He is, as promised, Falstaffian in proportion, but he carries his girth well. He looks like a man who has eaten professionally, and with tremendous gusto, for two decades. He is wearing a black leather jacket and a faded yellow T-shirt that reads "Evil Taco." He does have long henna hair streaked with gray and a perpetual squint. He'd make a good pirate.

The lunch place, which he is planning to review soon, is classic Jonathan Gold, meaning it is a mom-and-pop dive in the working-class neighborhood of Highland Park, a cafe called El Huarache Azteca, which boasts of its "el Chicano dog," and its sopas, tortas, tacos, pambasos, sincronizadas and platanos fritos.

My thought when I stepped inside Churrasco Grill for the first time: Is this the right place?

When you hear about a South American restaurant specializing in grilled steak and rotisserie chicken, you envision a small, smoky joint with a spit or grill out front.

Churrasco Grill is a cozy, pleasant little place, with 11 tables, a smattering of paintings and photographs on the wall, and a grill nowhere in sight. That's in the back, where you can find cook and co-owner Jorge Castillo.
