| ATSC supporters celebrate 25th years
The Sophisticates, the major support group for the Assessment and Treatment Services Center, chose a "Haute, Haute, Haute/Where the Element of Art Meets Fashion" theme to celebrate its 25th anniversary March 19 at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort. With Ferrari and Maserati of Newport Beach supplying luxury cars at the entrance, upscale store offerings via drawings and live auction and a first-class St. John spring fashion runway show, the 430 guests luxuriated in the moment. Sophisticates president Sarah Corrigan and event chairwoman Lisa Hallaian welcomed everyone, introducing Christopher Tate, St. John vice president of retail, Western region, and celebrity stylist and emcee Mark-Alan Harmon, who proclaimed long shorts to the knee, a J. Crew T-shirt, a blazer and cork platform heels a fun spring fashion trend.
Seniors’ tennis tournament 2007
One hundred and thirty players were in Gloucester last weekend to participate in the annual Seniors' Tennis Tournament which is always held close to Anzac Day. The players brought family and friends with them to offer support on the court and to inject some funds into the local economy! We were graced with perfect weather over the three days with only a rogue shower on Sunday afternoon to send players running for cover – but the last points had been played, so there were no ill- effects. All in all, it was an excellent weekend with lots of great tennis on display and great camaraderie both on and off the courts. Players came from all parts of the State – Dubbo, Inverell and the Blue Mountains as well as the Central Coast, Port Macquarie, Forster, Taree and many suburbs of Sydney.
Exciting Exhibitions, Thrilling Competition and Boutique Shopping ...
Celebrating its 111th year, the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is adding an eleventh day, Sunday, June 3, which will be devoted to local classes. Devon, which runs May 24 through June 3, benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital, to which it has donated over $12 million since 1919. One major change in the schedule follows the breeding classes that take over the Dixon Oval during the day on Thursday, June 1. On the evening schedule, classes will begin at 5 p.m., with saddlebred and coaching competitions, and the piece de resistance, the $75,000 Grand Prix of Devon will be held as the final class of the evening session, beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m. Jumper classes are held daily throughout the 10 days, culminating in two grand prix classes, held Thursday and Saturday evenings, but there is also a potpourri of equestrian disciplines, from hunters to elegant side saddle competitions, high stepping gaited horses and carriages of all types, plus exciting exhibitions.
Green salad has tasty dressing
I love fresh, green salads especially in the spring and summer months and lately have been experimenting with new combinations of ingredients and new dressings or vinaigrettes. I enjoy reading recipes and looking at magazine photos and imagining the taste of that plump red tomato or the leafy green lettuce leaf covered with a shiny dressing. Yum. I've even been thinking ahead to summer salads while planning my container garden. I'm impatiently waiting for a package of grape tomato seeds and a package of Early Girl tomatoes to germinate so I can transfer them to an outdoor pot. I'm also waiting for the weather to warm so I can move six gourmet lettuce plants to an outdoor planter. It will be nice to move my emerging garden from our dining table! And if I can figure out the best variety to buy, I'll also be planting some red bell peppers, and maybe some green ones as well.
Marlyn Monette: Friend shares memories, recipes of Natchitoches
Those of us who are familiar with Louisiana culture know the residents of the quaint little town of Natchitoches love to play. The lineup of events celebrated there each year is staggering. This original French colony of Louisiana continues to lure visitors. Natchitoches' heritage -- music, flowers, architecture, famous people and food -- is commemorated each year with much revelry, like the Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival, 4th of July Celebration on the Cane, Cane River Zydeco Festival, Meat Pie Festival and the Pilgrimage & Garden Tour in October, to name only a few. And, who could forget the beloved Clementine Hunter, one of America's most-celebrated primitive folk artists who lived most of her life at Melrose Plantation. .
ROASTED KABOCHA SQUASH SOUP WITH PANCETTA AND SAGE Gourmet ...
Pumpkins may be all the rage just now, but we've noticed another squash that's garnering a lot of attention lately. The inconspicuous kabocha squashtoo bumpy, squat, and unseasonably green to be taken seriously as porch décoris finally being hailed for its inner beauty. With deeply flavored meat more fiery orange than that of its famous cousin, the kabocha caught the attention of several readers, all of whom wrote to request recipes from various restaurants for kabocha soup. Such an incipient following may portend great things. Is there a Great Kabocha? Not yet, Charlie Brown, but here's a great kabocha soup. Active time: 30 min Start to finish: 1 1/2 hr .

Deal deja vu: Houston-based Todd Land Co. has 287 acres under contract at state Highway 146 near Dickinson Bayou in Texas City. The land development firm plans a marina, boardwalk restaurants, hotel and amphitheater at the site. But Richard Rice, vice president of development for Todd Land Co., cautions that plans are extremely preliminary, and theres much due diligence to be done before consummating the deal. .
