Living Designs: Ethan Allen among home-furnishing stores opening ...

Home-furnishings manufacturer and retailer Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. has opened its first store in the Triad.

The high-end store - covering 17,500 square feet and offering full design services - is off Hanes Mall Boulevard at Shoppes on Little Creek near Texas Land & Cattle Steak House.

The store employs 18 people, including 12 designers.

"We're very excited to be in this Triad market," said Andrea Crews, the senior project manager. "The response has been wonderful."

Hanes Mall Boulevard is beginning to look like furniture row. Ashley Furniture recently opened a store near Hanes Point Shopping Center and Hudson's Broyhill Furniture Gallery is expected to open a store at Shoppes on Little Creek next year.

Ethan Allen's design center has a different feel from that of the traditional furniture store.

Gourmet Guys get guts growling

Chefs fine-tuned their recipes for competition, guests reviewed the menu, money flowed from pockets, and the feeding frenzy began Sunday at the Gourmet Guys fundraiser at the Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls.

It was the sixth year for this fundraiser for the center, and the smell of a good meal enticed hundreds.

The event gathered more than 40 Sioux Falls men to serve up their own special recipes for guests. Money goes to support programs and services at the center.

Gerald Beninga, president and CEO of the Center for Active Generations, said the large crowds and a gathering of famous "chefs" is like magic.

"It is a big social event, brings out people and resources from every part of our community," he said.

Tom Hanson, KDLT-TV anchor, is in his fourth year, and said it is amazing how much the crowd has grown throughout the years.

Magazine doesn't look down its nose at everyday cooks

Every foodie has his favorite magazines. Bon Appetit, Saveur, Food Arts and Cook's Illustrated rank highest on my list. Gourmet, Food & Wine, and Martha Stewart Everyday Cooking are must-reads.

And though food snobs may scoff, there's one more magazine I routinely review: Taste of Home, because it reflects how most Americans cook.

Sophisticates are almost obliged to wring their hands over that. Published six times a year, Taste of Home leans heavily on easy techniques and easier-to-find ingredient staples. Here is a magazine not only not shy about, but downright proud of, its willingness to include condensed soups and biscuit mix among its ingredients.

But the proof is in the figurative pudding. Produced by Reiman Publications, based in Greendale, Wis., and recently acquired by Reader's Digest, the magazine resonates with heartland America.

Marlyn Monette: Friend shares memories, recipes of Natchitoches

Those of us who are familiar with Louisiana culture know the residents of the quaint little town of Natchitoches love to play. The lineup of events celebrated there each year is staggering. This original French colony of Louisiana continues to lure visitors.

Natchitoches' heritage -- music, flowers, architecture, famous people and food -- is commemorated each year with much revelry, like the Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival, 4th of July Celebration on the Cane, Cane River Zydeco Festival, Meat Pie Festival and the Pilgrimage & Garden Tour in October, to name only a few. And, who could forget the beloved Clementine Hunter, one of America's most-celebrated primitive folk artists who lived most of her life at Melrose Plantation.
